Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete our recent survey exploring the level of ‘bounce-back’ the industry is experiencing now, the challenges we are facing, and the outlook for the rest of the year and beyond.
Current demand
The good news is that nearly 85% on respondents said their business is now either fully operational or operating at more than 50% of their normal levels. A similar percentage are finding that demand is now over 60% of pre-pandemic levels, with 23% saying demand is greater now than it was before the pandemic started.
When will we be back to normal?
62% of respondents said they thought demand would be over 80% of previous levels by quarter 4 this year, but only 31% thought that the market would return to normal by the end of the year and 38% thought it would not return to normal until after 2021.
Challenges ahead
Asked about the biggest challenges for the rest of this year, two main themes emerged. The first is around cashflow and the difficulties in getting paid on time. The other challenge is planning in these difficult times. Some people experienced a spike in demand and urgency immediately after the lockdown, while others are finding it difficult to gauge the speed of projects due to the social distancing requirements on site. Anticipating demand and putting the right level of resource in place to manage that demand efficiently is a key area of focus for many.
