In this series of emails, we have been exploring the design options that are available to you when specifying your doors. With a little imagination and some help from our experts, you can turn your performance doors into a unique design statement; doors that are striking and individual, whilst working in harmony with the rest of the building.
Over the last two weeks we have looked at vision panels and veneers; this week we will explore the other finishes that are available.
Laminates
A wide choice of high-pressure laminate finishes is available, and whilst solid block colours are popular, there are some great wood-effect laminates too, and you can choose a smooth or textured finish. Not only are laminates easy to clean, they are also impact-resistant and very hard-wearing.
If you are specifying doors for a hospital or school and want to add a splash of colour, laminates are a great way to achieve this. Coloured doors can also be an effective way of designating zones in a building (so in a school, blue doors could signify rooms used for science and red could be used for the art rooms, for example). Similarly, if a building has several meeting rooms, the door colour could be used to help differentiate between them – ‘We’ll meet in the room with the orange door’.
PVC
From a practical perspective, a PVC finish can be used to fully encapsulate the door, making it water-resistant and easy to clean. With the added ability to specify an antimicrobial finish, PVC is a popular choice for situations where hygiene is important. As with laminates, there is a wide choice of colours and textures to choose from.
From a design perspective, PVC literally offers endless possibilities, as you can choose to have the PVC on each door printed with your own bespoke design. Whilst this could be functional, for example giving the room a name or number, it’s also possible to specify doors with colourful patterns, pictures, company logos and even photos. Painted
Paint finishes are popular, not least because you can choose from a comprehensive range of RAL colours for your doors. If you choose to have your doors delivered fully finished, they will be spray painted in our factory for a perfectly smooth result. In this case it is advisable to install the doorsets once the other trades have finished on site to minimise the chance of damage.
Alternatively, you can choose to have the doors primed ready for an on-site finish. This is a great option if you want the doors to match with the décor on the surrounding walls.
