Fire Door Safety Week was first launched in 2013 and is now an annual campaign designed to raise awareness of the critical role of fire doors in every commercial, public and multiple-occupancy residential building.

The ‘Five Step Fire Door Check’ summarised below is a key part of the Fire Door Safety Week message.
1. Certification
Check that the door and all its ironmongery are properly certified by a reputable third party like BM Trada or IFC. Specifying a fully certified doorset rather than individually certified components means that the door, frame and ironmongery have all been tested together as a unit, giving additional confidence that they will perform as they should.
2. Apertures
Altering the door for glazing and ventilation on site will make the certification void, so make sure the door is specified correctly from the outset and that the specific design is covered by the certification. 3. Gaps and seals
Check that the gap around the door is consistent and around 3-4mm. Hinges must be fitted with no missing screws and all the seals must be fitted to all four sides. Specifying made-to-measure doors (rather than off-the-shelf doors that come in set sizes) helps ensure that the gap is neither too big nor too small.
4. Closers
Check that the door closer shuts the door onto the latch from any position – even if the door is opened just a few centimetres.
5. Operation
Ensure that the door closes correctly around all parts of the frame.
